It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mathis Copeland Jr., age 83, who left us on September 15, 2024, in Dittmer, MO.

Born on September 10, 1941, in Aberdeen, MS, he was the son of the late Mathis Sr. and Josie Dodd Copeland.

Mathis dedicated his life to hard work and generosity, leaving an indelible mark on everyone who knew him. As the owner of a cherished cotton farm, he was known for his unwavering commitment to his work and the land. He tirelessly cultivated his crops, instilling the values of diligence and resilience in those around him. His kindness extended beyond the fields; he was a man who never turned away anyone in need, offering his help without hesitation or charge.

Mathis had a passion for the outdoors, particularly fishing. He cherished the moments spent camping and fishing with his family, where laughter and love were woven into every gathering. Those memories will live on in the hearts of his family and friends, a testament to the joyful spirit he brought to every outing.

On June 2, 1961, in Matthews, MO, he married Mary Kathleen Copeland, who preceded him in death on March 14, 1996.

He is survived by his children Gary Copeland & Laura Henley of Dittmer, MO, son-in-law Philip Henley, Jr., four brothers, Joe "Yogy" Copeland of Dexter, MO, James Coplin of Chaffee, MO, Bruster Copeland of Sikeston, MO, and Sonny Copeland of Morehouse, MO; seven grandchildren, Steffany, Chelsea, Layla, Laithe, Zach, Zoe, and Mason, and three great-grandchildren, Jersey, Kaiya, and Kyndal, who will carry his legacy of kindness and hard work forward. Mathis will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for his gentle soul and the love he shared.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Ricky Lee Copeland; four brothers, Joe White, Jim Copeland, Richardson Copeland, and Durley Copeland; and one granddaughter, Tiffany.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2024, from 11 to 1 p.m. at Ponder Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m., where friends and family are invited to celebrate his life. Burial will follow in the Matthews Cemetery in Matthews, MO.

Pallbearers will be Laithe Copeland, Zach Copeland, Leland Hildebrand, Kendrick Moody, Gary Copeland, Bruster Copeland, and Brian Schwertmann.
