Jimmy
Baker
April 5, 1939 – May 11, 2026
Jimmy Baker was born on April 5, 1939, in Hickory Valley, Tennessee, to the union of Dallas and Ruby Bills. He was the fourth of eight children and was raised with strong values, unwavering determination, and an entrepreneurial spirit that would guide him throughout his life. From an early age, Jimmy possessed a remarkable work ethic, deep faith, and a vision for building a better future for himself and those he loved.
At the age of sixteen, Jimmy left his hometown alongside family members and journeyed to Chicago, Illinois, in search of greater opportunities. He later settled in Gary, Indiana, where he began laying the foundation for the life, family, and legacy he would build over the years.
In 1956, Jimmy began his working career at The Darling Shop in Hammond, Indiana, where he worked as a stocker and window trimmer. The following year, he continued his employment at Blaw-Knox Foundry in East Chicago, Indiana, further developing the discipline and determination that would characterize his life's journey.
In August of 1958, Jimmy married Sheila, and from this union he became the proud father of three children. Family remained at the center of Jimmy's life, and he worked tirelessly to provide for and support those he loved.
Throughout his life, Jimmy embraced many entrepreneurial ventures. Early on, he helped establish a family-owned restaurant and a fleet of catering trucks, combining his passion for business with his heart for serving the community. While building success in the food service industry, his lifelong love for music continued to grow, ultimately opening the door to a new and meaningful chapter in his life.
In 1967, Jimmy relocated to Chicago, Illinois, where he began selling records and tapes from the trunk of his car — a humble beginning that would evolve into a remarkable and thriving enterprise. During this season of his life, he met his second wife, Gwen, and together they welcomed two daughters. Over the years, Jimmy expanded his business endeavors by opening multiple record stores throughout the Chicagoland area, transforming his passion for music into a flourishing business that touched countless lives through the power of music.
His success in the music industry led him into producing and artist management, where he managed the renowned group The Brown Brothers and promoted gospel showcases featuring legendary artists such as The Williams Brothers, The Jackson Southernaires, The Canton Spirituals, and Lee Williams & The Spiritual QC's, among many others. Through his work, Jimmy helped bring gospel music and inspiration to communities throughout the region.
Never one to limit himself, Jimmy continued expanding his entrepreneurial pursuits by co-owning an auto detailing shop in Chicago Heights, Illinois, while also investing in real estate properties and other business ventures. After nearly four decades of success in the Chicagoland area, Jimmy was ready to begin another chapter. In the spring of 1997, he relocated his family to Parma, Missouri, where he co-owned A-1 Auto Repair. The business later expanded with a second location in Sikeston, Missouri, in 1998, where it continued to serve the community for nearly thirty years.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jimmy found great joy in restoring antique cars and carpentry. His creativity, meticulous craftsmanship, and love for working with his hands were evident in everything he touched. Whether building, repairing, or restoring, Jimmy took pride in his work and left a lasting impression on all who witnessed his talents.
Jimmy peacefully departed this life on Monday, May 11, 2026, in Sikeston, Missouri, at the age of 87, surrounded by the love of his family. He leaves behind a legacy of love, wisdom, resilience, entrepreneurship, and unwavering faith that will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
