Obituary

Charles Allen 'Sonnie' Carmack. age 82, passed away March 17, 2026 at Mercy Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau, MO.

He was born December 26, 1943 in Sikeston, MO, son of the late Allen Lee 'Buck' Carmack and Ethel Laverne Finney-Carmack.

Charles was a member of the Christ Gospel Church and had served in the US Air Force and was stationed in Germany and Nebraska. He then served in the Army National Guard serving in Honduras, Panama, California, Wisconsin, and the surrounding areas for Weekend Warrior. Along with serving in the AF and MOANG he worked many jobs; McKnight Keaton, Proctor & Gamble, Cablesouth Co., Barnett's Pluming, Media Press, National Lock, Phillip Hann Roofing, Construction work, farmed on  farms of Stroble Farms, Lape Farms, and Roy Ward Farms. He did it all and much more.

He enjoyed woodworking, playing computer games, mowing the yard, and fishing. He loved spending time with family, and especially loved playing with his grandkids and great grandkids.

On May 9, 1965 he was married to Lois Layton-Carmack who survives of the home in Sikeston, MO.

Other survivors include two sons, Ronnie Carmack Sikeston, MO and Charles Allen (Rebecca) Carmack II Essex, MO; one daughter, Rhonda Carmack-Miller Dexter, MO; grandchildren, Joshua (Lela), Eric, Matthew, Kristen (Jake), Sarah (Allen), Michael (Janessa), Ashley (Aaron), Zachary, Jordan (Laura), and Hannah (Drew); great grandchildren, Mason, Silas, Jacen, James, Elijah, River, Lynlee, Oliver, Westlynn, Emryn, Prestynn, Huxlee, Lucas, and one on the way; one brother, Dennis (Terry) Carmack Essex, MO; four sisters, Vernice King Sikeston, MO, Sandra Nations St Charles, IL, Kathy (Ernie Sr.) Williams Essex, MO, and Kimberly (Roger) Malloy Essex, MO; two aunts Lillian Causey and Barbara Finney both of Indiana; two uncles, Richard Finney IN and James Cochran Sikeston, MO; sisters-in-law, Joyce Hall, Parzee Baker, Sandra Layton all of Essex, MO, and Linda Layton Rockford, IL; brother-in-law and best friend Lester Baker Bloomfield, MO; and a host of nephews, nieces, relatives, and friends that will miss him so much.

In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by one brother, William Augustus Carmack; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Raymond and Mary Merriman Layton; brothers-in-law, AW Layton, RD Layton, Doyle Layton, Willis Layton, Danny Lee Layton, Ras Hall, Joe King, and David Nations; three nephews; and three nieces.

Visitation will be held Monday, March 23, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Ponder Funeral Home in Sikeston, where funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 24, at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Larry Davis will be officiating the services.

Interment will follow at 1:00 p.m. at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield with full military honors.

Pallbearers will be Joshua Carmack, Eric Turley, Michael Carmack, Zachary Carmack, Jordan Carmack, and Aaron Welty.

Honorary pallbearers are Matthew Carmack and Jake Flowers
