Barry "Bear" Wayne McDowell, age 67, passed away January 24, 2025, surrounded by his family in Matthews, MO.
Barry was born October 11, 1957, in Dexter, MO to the late Coy Gardner McDowell and Martha Lou Kelley.
Barry married his wife LeeAnn Evans on February 16, 2002, in Sikeston, MO, she survives of the home.
Barry graduated class of 1977 from Sikeston Highschool. Not long after, he began his career in the fire service, starting as a volunteer firefighter with the Miner Fire Department. Demonstrating dedication and leadership, he rose to become the Miner Fire Chief and took on the role of Code Enforcement. In 2001, Barry joined Sikeston Public Safety, serving there until 2015. His commitment to public service was further evidenced by his attendance at the police academy in 2003. With over four decades of experience in the fire service, Barry's contributions to his community were both significant and enduring.
Barry was a man of many talents and passions, with a deep love for the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, with a particularly cherished tradition of attending the Sikeston Complex fishing derby each year with his daughters. His enthusiasm and skills often led them to victory, creating lasting memories. As a father, Barry was devoted and supportive, always present for his daughters and offering them the unique experience of spending time with him at the fire station. His generosity extended beyond his family, as he used his skills in construction to assist anyone in need. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather; he will be greatly missed.
Including his wife Barry is survived by four daughters, Melissa Nicole McDowell, Rachel Michelle (Thomas) Raley, Emily Coffee, and Amber Dawn (Tevin) Gibson; two sisters, Carolyn Sue (Lawson) Bailey and Melodie Jo (Eric) Hinson; four grandchildren Christian, Savannah, Javari, and Nahmere; he also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, family members, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Davey Rodger McDowell.
Visitation will be held Sunday, February 2 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Ponder Funeral Home in Sikeston, MO
Funeral services will be Monday, February 3 beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Ponder Funeral Home in Sikeston.
His daughter, Rev. Melissa McDowell, will be officiating the services.
Pallbearers will be Keith Brown, Thomas Raley, Christian Raley, James Evans, Doyle Noe, and Hunter Cooksey.
Burial will follow at Sikeston Memorial Park Cemetery.
