In Remembrance of Agatha Clara (Gay) Goehri French

It is with profound sadness and heartfelt love that we announce the passing of Gay Goehri French, a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Born in St. Louis, MO on June 8, 1951, Gay departed this life on August 7, 2026, in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her loving family.

Gay was the beloved daughter of the late Louis C. and Carolyn W. Goehri of Sikeston, MO. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Margaret Beggs of Blodgett, MO, and her brother Louis C. Goehri Jr of Sikeston, MO. Gay is survived by her devoted husband, Fred S. French, with whom she shared a beautiful journey of love and partnership for 53 years, having married on March 17, 1973, in Sikeston, MO.

Together with Fred, Gay raised a loving family, leaving behind two cherished children and their spouses: Christian (Chris) and Stephanie French of Bertrand, MO, and Carolyn (Beth) and Denney Neace of Alexandria, VA. Her legacy of love and music continues with her three adored grandchildren: Uriah French of Bertrand, MO, and Patrick and Margaret Neace of Alexandria, VA. Gay is also survived by her sister, Myrna Etheridge of Poplar Bluff, MO, as well as many nieces and nephews.

A proud alumna of Sikeston Senior High School, class of 1969, Gay pursued her passion for music at Southeast Missouri State University, earning a Bachelor's degree in Music Education in 1973 and later a Master's degree in Music Education in 1995. Her career as an Orchestra teacher at Sikeston Public Schools spanned 26 years, during which her dedication and passion touched the lives of countless students. Gay's commitment to music education was recognized with numerous accolades, including SPS Teacher of the Year in 2001 and Orchestra Teacher of the Year by the Missouri Music Educator's Association and the American String Teacher's Association in 2002.

Even after her retirement in 2012, Gay continued to nurture young musicians through private lessons, sharing her expertise and love for music until the end of 2025. Her contributions extended beyond the classroom, as she actively participated in music organizations such as the National Federation of Music Clubs, Allegro Music Club, Southeast Missouri Music Educator's Association, and Missouri Music Educators Association. She also formed the Swinging Strings, delighting many with performances at weddings and community events.

Gay's love for music was matched only by her love for travel. With her beloved Fred, she explored 46 states and 7 countries, creating countless memories along the way. Her commitment to music was also evident in her role as choral director at First Christian Church of Sikeston, where she shared her talents with congregations for many years.

A celebration of Gay's life will be held at First Christian Church, located at 1006 N. Main St., Sikeston, MO 63801.

In accordance with Gay's wishes, we invite you to leave your concert black at home and instead wear bright colors and Birkenstocks, if you have them, as we come together to celebrate the vibrant life she led. The family will hold a private burial at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield, MO at a later date.

Gay's warmth, talent, and kindness have left an indelible mark on all who knew her. Her spirit will continue to resonate in the hearts of her family, friends, and the countless students she inspired throughout her life.

Services will be on Sunday, August 16th, at First Christian Church visitation beginning at 1:30 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 4:00 p.m. with Rev. Jason Williams officiating the services.

A private family only interment will be at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery at a later date.
